Browsing SSAS (2005) Dimensions from Excel

Hi all,

I am having difficulty understanding why my dimension names aren't showing up in a pivot table field list when I browse SSAS 2005 cubes from Excel 2003 (using the 90 PTS OLAP DLL).

Has anybody else experienced this problem where the dimension names aren't being made visible? Unfortunately all I see are my attribute names and these, by themselves, are extremely ambiguous.

Just wondering if there are any quick and easy fixes or work-arounds that anybody could recommend.

Thanks in advance,
DB
Since the hierarchies within dimensions (including the visible default attribute hierarchies) are probably what you're seeing in Excel, one work-around would be to create user-defined hierarchies with more meaningful names within the dimensions, even if they merely mimic an attribute hierarchy with an ambiguous name. The corresponding attribute hierarchies could then be hidden, to avoid confusion.

Configuring Multilevel Hierarchies

The Cube Wizard and the Dimension Wizard in Business Intelligence Development Studio in Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services (SSAS) create multilevel hierarchies that are based on natural (one-to-many) relationships between columns in tables of a database. You can also create and edit hierarchies by using the Dimension Structure tab of Dimension Designer.

The Hierarchies and Levels pane of the Dimension Structure tab shows the hierarchies in the dimension. The title bar for a hierarchy shows the name of the hierarchy, which you can change by setting the Name property of the hierarchy. The levels of a hierarchy are marked by dots—the root level is marked by a single dot, and each level below the root is marked with an additional dot.

Click a hierarchy to display its properties in the Properties window. Click a level in the hierarchy to display its properties.

Creating Multilevel Hierarchies

Create multilevel hierarchies by dragging attributes from the Attributes pane of the Dimension Structure tab to a blank area on the Hierarchies and Levels pane. You can also drag columns from the Data Source View pane to the Hierarchies and Levels pane. Dragging a column creates the corresponding attribute, if the attribute does not already exist. To add an attribute or a column as a level in an existing hierarchy, drag the attribute or column to the existing hierarchy. As you drag an attribute or a column over a hierarchy, a bar indicates where the new level will be created when you drop the attribute or the column on the hierarchy.

>>
Showing or Hiding an Attribute Hierarchy

If you want to add an attribute as a level to multilevel hierarchies, but you do not want users to see the attribute hierarchy in client applications, set AttributeHierarchyEnabled to True and set AttributeHierarchyVisible to False. These settings prevent users from browsing an attribute hierarchy without disabling it. The AttributeHierarchyVisible setting is ignored if AttributeHierarchyEnabled is set to False.
>>

|||Your work-around makes sense. But it is a great deal of effort to do this for all of our dimension attributes in all of our dimensions.

I am still somewhat amazed that Excel 2003 isn't automatically displaying dimension names. Call me crazy but it seems to me that the name of the dimension is significant enough to display in some fashion.

Thanks,
db

browsing for server

I have placed a Windows 2003 server, running SQL Server 2000 on a DMZ that i
s
on my internal network. I understand that as a Windows system starts, it
advertises its services through Service Advertising Protocol, which allows
client computers to browse and select servers of a particular type (in my
case a SQL Server). Is this just a broadcast, or is it registering
somewhere, like with active directory or a master browser? What firewall
rule needs to exist (what port or ports do I need to allow) to enable that
server to advertise that it has SQL Server to clients on another network
connected to the firewall?
Thanks,
JHi Badazizi,
1. SQL Server is using port 1433 as default. If it is purposely changed then
you can check which port it is using through Server Network Utility under SQ
L
Program Groups
2. If you want to publish this SQL instance in Active Directory the you have
to do the same through enterprise manage then properties and then active
directory add.
If u need further clarification let me know

Browsing for Publication error message

I have setup everything from my domain to the dmz following the document from Replication Answers.com "Replication Across Non-Trusted Domains or Using the Internet"
When setting up the anonymous pull subscription, browsing for the DMZ publication, I see the DMZ server (Publisher) but when I click the (+) to view publications I am receiving the error message;
"Could not obtain information about Windows NT group / user 'DOMAIN NAME/SQLAdministrator' "
This is the account that runs my Sql Server Agent of the sql server in the domain (The Subscriber)
I don't want to use this account, the DMZ server is a part of the domain!!!! I have setup a sql account on both the domain sql server & the dmz sql server.
What am I missing? Where would it be retrieving this account?
I feel like I am so close. I was actually able to create a subscription by using Hilary's book & scripts from QA (But couldn't get the Agent to start - Start/Stop Agent were grayed out)
JLS
I tried yet another approach...
I pulled the initial snapshot folder off the publisher & put it on the subscriber. In the subscription properties, I told it to look in this folder on the subscriber, but I get an error message that the process could not read the file.
I'm just trying everything & I think I'm down to my problem has to do with the initial snapshot. PLEASE shove me in the right direction....

|||Hi Jude,
While using nosync subscription is a perfectly valid option, the problem that your experienced seems to be the kind that is relatively straightforward to resolve. If I understand the situation correctly, you have manually copied the snapshot files to a different location on the subscriber and attempted to apply the snapshot from the new location via the use of the alternate snapshot folder property of the pull subscription. One non-intuitive quirk that typically catches people off-guard is to set the alternate snapshot location directly to where the snapshot files are rather than to where the unc or ftp folder is. That is, you need to have the <unc|ftp>\<Publisher>_<PublisherDB>_<Publication>\ <timestamp>\<snapshot files> folder structure underneath your alternate snapshot folder. So, if you manually copy the snapshot files around, you would need to recreate the same folder structure that I mention previously in your target location and then point the alternate snapshot folder to the "root" of that sub-structure. I would be interested to know if your scenario has more twists than what I expected.

Thank you for this answer, I am going to check to make sure I have my alternate snapshot folder set as you suggest.
If I may impose, when browsing for the publication on the DMZ to setup an anonymous pull subscription, why would I receive an error message about the domain account on the Subscriber that runs the SQL Server Agent service?
Why is it referring to this account at all?
Certainly both servers Sql Server agent accounts do not have to be the same, especially when one of the servers is out on the net & not even on the domain?

It is sort of difficult for me to visualize exactly what is going on with the description you gave previously (or any kind of description that you can possibly provide over the newsgroup) but I would guess that the subscriber SQL Server Agent service account was somehow added to the publication access list of the publication on the DMZ. If this is the case then you will likely see the kind of error message that you saw when browsing the publication properties through the UI (which also enumerates entries in the publication acces list). To find out, select from the MSpublication_access table in the distribution database and see if the account for your Subscriber's SQL Server Agent service account shows up. |||Sorry for the cryptic description, I posted in another thread describing my problem in detail, so let me do that again with you & perhaps you can 'see' where I am going wrong.
Subscriber = On my domain
DMZ SQL Server = Not on my domain (1 way trust is setup)
There is a firewall involved here (My Network Admin has VERY reluctantly setup rules on the firewall)
================================================== ================================================== ==========
The Subscriber can connect to the Publisher in the DMZ, no problem. As a matter of fact, this particular Subscriber server is publishing to this DMZ server (One way trust is working fine)
I have the alias set & I have an entry in the hosts file for this DMZ server.
I have the publication setup to allow anonymous subscriptions.
Here's what I am down to when I try to setup the Pull Subscription at the Subscriber, from the publication on the DMZ server.
I get an error message about not being able to retrieve info about publications on the DMZ Server AND I get an error message about not being able to retrieve info about the Domain account that is the Service startup account for Sql Agent on the Subscriber. I don't want to use this domain account anyway, I have the publication setup to use a Sql Account that I created specifically for this replication.
Why would it be trying to use the Sql Agent Service Account, and not REPLDMZ sql account I setup on both boxes?
================================================== ================================================== ===========
So, I tried to set everything up by using scripts on the Subscriber.
exec sp_addpullsubscription
@.publisher = 'MARKYMARK',
@.publisher_db = 'SNN',
@.publication = 'SNN',
@.independent_agent = 'True',
@.subscription_type = 'anonymous',
@.update_mode = 'read only'
exec sp_addpullsubscription_agent
@.publisher = 'MARKYMARK',
@.publisher_db = 'SNN',
@.publication = 'SNN',
@.distributor = 'MARKYMARK',
@.subscriber_security_mode = 1,
@.distributor_security_mode = 1,
@.subscriber_login = 'repldmz',
@.subscriber_password = 'insert password here'
I get a connection failure when I try to start synchronizing, it says it can't connect to the distributor on the DMZ server & appears to be trying to connect with the Subscriber domain account that runs sql agent on the subscriber.
I haven't setup replication using scripts before, so this was just a shot in the dark since I cannot browse the DMZ publications from EM.
Is this a better description of my issue? I feel like I'm really close to getting this anonymous pull setup, but one piece of the puzzle is missing?

Sorry for the cryptic description, I posted in another thread describing my problem in detail, so let me do that again with you & perhaps you can 'see' where I am going wrong.
Subscriber = On my domain
DMZ SQL Server = Not on my domain (1 way trust is setup)
There is a firewall involved here (My Network Admin has VERY reluctantly setup rules on the firewall)
================================================== ================================================== ==========
================================================== ================================================== ===========
So, I tried to set everything up by using scripts on the Subscriber.
exec sp_addpullsubscription
@.publisher = 'MARKYMARK',
@.publisher_db = 'SNN',
@.publication = 'SNN',
@.independent_agent = 'True',
@.subscription_type = 'anonymous',
@.update_mode = 'read only'
exec sp_addpullsubscription_agent
@.publisher = 'MARKYMARK',
@.publisher_db = 'SNN',
@.publication = 'SNN',
@.distributor = 'MARKYMARK',
@.subscriber_security_mode = 1,
@.distributor_security_mode = 1,
@.subscriber_login = 'repldmz',
@.subscriber_password = 'insert password here'
I get a connection failure when I try to start synchronizing, it says it can't connect to the distributor on the DMZ server & appears to be trying to connect with the Subscriber domain account that runs sql agent on the subscriber.
I haven't setup replication using scripts before, so this was just a shot in the dark since I cannot browse the DMZ publications from EM.
Is this a better description of my issue? I feel like I'm really close to getting this anonymous pull setup, but one piece of the puzzle is missing?

Hi Jude,
It is sort of difficult for me to visualize exactly what is going on with the description you gave previously (or any kind of description that you can possibly provide over the newsgroup) but I would guess that the subscriber SQL Server Agent service account was somehow added to the publication access list of the publication on the DMZ. If so, manually removing the row will likely resolve the issue for you.

Raymond,
Thank you for this answer, I am going to check to make sure I have my alternate snapshot folder set as you suggest.
Any light you can shed on this will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Jude,
While using nosync subscription is a perfectly valid option, the problem that your experienced seems to be the kind that is relatively straightforward to resolve.

Browsing cubes through interfaces other than the BI Studio?

I've built a cube, deployed it and processed it. I can use the brower in the BI Studio to see the data subsets and can manipulate it. How do I get this cube to the user without having to install BI Studios on their computer?

Basically how do I get the cube into IIS so the user can just open a web browser and go to it? Similar to how cognos does it with their cubes. Or is this not possible?

I see no way to view the cube unless you are using the BI Studio to open it. Am I missing something?

You are indee missing quite a lot.

There are many different ways to browse a cube using different applications. Just to name a few: Excel, Office Web Components ( you see it embedded in BI Dev studio), ProClarity, and many others.

After building a cube you should decide on the way you going to let your users to browse a cube data. Take a look at client application and evaluate which one works for you the best and then deploy it on client machines.

Try out a new PivotTables in Beta of Office2007.

Could you point me to some documentation on or the correct direction to being able to view the cubes through a web interface? I'd like to be able to use strictly Server 2003 and SQL 2005 and be able to deploy these cubes to IIS for viewing without the use of a third system or special installations on PCs.

So with that in mind I'd like to be able to view these cubes from any computer that has an Internet explorer window.

Browsing Cube

Hi,

I have created, populate and processed a cube successfully and can also browse it successfully on one server. But when I deploy this cube to another server I can create, populate and process the cube sucessfully but when I go to browse the cube through SQL Management Studio I recive the following error:

The query could not be processed: o OLE DB error: OLE DB or ODBC error: You do not have permission to run 'SP_TRACE_CREATE'.; 42000.

I have checked the security and it all appears to be the same, I am using the domain administrator on both servers.

Have you any idea what my issue might be?

Your help will be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Hi,

I resolved this issue myself and am position what my resolution so that i may hopefully help someone else if they are to encounter the same problem.

Resolution:

I set the authentication of the datasources being used by the cube to SQL authentication and then used the SQL server 'sa' account as the user.

|||This would imply that you are using ROLAP or HOLAP storage. You should not need to use the "sa" account. A user with db_datareader rights should be enough. The "sa" user has too many rights and really should not be used for anything other than administrative tasks.|||

Hi Darren,

All dimensions of the cube are using plain MOLAP and the cube itself is using plain MOLAP also. If you have any suggestions on how I could browse the cube with using 'sa' as the datasources user then that would be great as I also think as you mentioned that 'sa' should only be used for administration purposes.

Cheers,

|||

MOLAP storage only needs a SQL connection at processing time. When you browse it does not need a connection to the relational source. You could try using SQL Profiler to see what is going on. Do you have pro-active caching or something like that configured?

Hi

I have created a cube. I want to show it to the clients that do not have the Business Intellegence development studio or visual studio installed. Is there any other method of browsing a deployed cube?

Probably the most widely available client is Excel.

Mosha has one of the best lists of SSAS clients on his wesite http://www.mosha.com/msolap/util.htm

|||Excel is a good choice. Also, you can generate a local cube file based on your data and let Excel connect directly to it. This way you can show the cube and data to the clients on a machine that doesn't run (and has no network connection to) the AS server.|||

Browsing a cube in ssrs Matrix

When we browse the cube in management studio we are able to see the correct aggregates where as in the report from reporting services we are just getting the sums instead of running aggregates especially in the intersection cells of columns and rows. ( where ever the aggregrate function is difference/division. )

Is there a setting in reporting services which would make the report return the running aggregates like in the management studio.

thanks in advance

The brower is diferent in Reporting Services, but if you use the MATRIX in reporting Services, you all the cells for columns, rows and data!

Try it... if you never did that, use the wizard!

Helped?

The issues under "Improved Indexing in SQL Server" are well known on the
fulltext newsgroup. While both concerns are not features in SQL 2000 FTS or
SQL 2005 FTS, both issues are solvable at the application level with data
duplication. I've emailed DForbes to see if he's had previous emails on this
topic per his request.
Paul, I'm sure that the FTS Dev Lead knows about this issue and hopefully
post-Yukon it will be incorporated in the next SQL Server version, besides
he knows how to contact me.. <g>.
